The future of Victorian schools:

2026 is shaping up to be a year that offers Victorian residents accessibility and availability to great local schools. Another eight schools have been handed to designers by the Victorian Government. The expectation is to deliver 100 new schools by 2026. 

Over the next five years the Victorian schooling system will come under extreme pressure due to the expected population growth. The projections are that 115 000 additional students will be entering the education system.  Because of this unprecedented growth there needs to be significant planning and development of Victorian schools.

Eight of the thirteen schools have already had architecture firms appointed for design. These schools are due to be open in 2022.

The focus of the plan:

The design and development of these schools will make better use of space and the local area. They will incorporate smart design to facilitate land-use sharing.  Because of this design, schools will allow for more than just places of learning. 

A key initiative is to maximise value of these new spaces.  The Victorian Government’s plan will not only create new hubs but also transform current facilities. The community will be the predominant focus for all new developments. Certain design outcomes such as bringing people together and connecting local services are key factors of these new spaces.

The education sector is Victoria’s largest services export industry, therefore these new schools are being given significant focus.  Education is the foundation that enables people to develop the skills needed to drive the dynamic and evolving economy. A primary push is to maintain and grow Victoria’s competitive edge in education outcomes. 

As we move towards a smarter and better-connected state, we can expect our students to master new technology.  The hope is that our education system generates innovators, creators and digital professionals.
